WE THE PEOPLE
WeThePeople

We live in a world today where technology has enabled a social existence which is at once exhibitionistic and insanely private. Social identity has divorced itself from the physical environment, and community is a projection which we tune in to, channel or browse to choose the variations which suit us best.

These paintings speak of the insoluble dilemma of the society we live in. They attempt to square the circle of our social contradictions, showing the headless anonymity of the world we have made, and the deeply personal individuality which we can never escape. The repeating grid is the window of our uniform environment, and the shift of color from one half of the canvas to the next communicates the arbitrary changes we make 'out there.' Yet each individual speaks easily through the grid. The clothing which honors the bodies it covers, the personal adornments of jewelry or tattoos, the conviction of individual gestures — all these speak of the particular, the ordinary, the individual soul.

These paintings celebrate how humanly individual we all are, how bound we are to our individual nature, whatever our attempts may be to escape from this fundamental of our existence.
