This collection explores the relationships between gesture and thought, body and space. The individuals are detached from context, and their gestures express an inner dialogue that requires solitude. I emphasize the dramatic effects of light and dark as a means to convey emotion and evoke sanctuary.
The paintings of hands are subjects in themselves, and being larger than life, they interact with the viewer. They float in space, giving them a surreal quality, and emerge from an ambiguous background set deep in shadow.
This work was inspired by mannerist and chiaroscuro techniques of the Late Renaissance and Early Baroque, the emotional gesture used in silent film and theater, and the idea that space can be perceived as an extension of the body.
On stage we are moving gestures. Behind the curtain we are empty space.
